C is for Ceramics. C is for â€“ Yingge? Well, not quite, but â€˜Yingge is for ceramicsâ€™ is something almost any Taiwanese can chant. This little town (YÄ«nggÄ“) in the very southern part of Taipei County lives by and for the production of high- and low-quality ceramic and pottery objects: everything from cupboard handles to Song-dynasty vases.

Pottery was introduced to Yingge in 1804, and a century later ceramics also began to be developed. Both industries flourished due to the excellent local clay and good local transport network, originally using the river and later rail. In recent years the town made the successful leap from manufacturing base to cultural venue. The opening in 1999 of the NT6-billion Yingge Ceramics Museum and the creation of the â€˜Old Streetâ€™ solidified this crossover and put Yingge on the travellerâ€™s map for lovers of traditional crafts.

Yangmingshan National Park Taipei Taiwan Travel Videos

How fortunate Taipei is to have this national park (YÃ¡ngmÃngshÄn GuÃ³jiÄ GÅngyuÃ¡n) at its doorstep, complete with majestic mountains, hot springs, tall grasses, forests of bamboo and broad-leaf trees and some handsome lodgings and restaurants. Among its 1200-plus species of plants, the area is particularly known for rhododendrons, azaleas and Japanese cherry trees. An excellent escape from the city for hikers, bikers (of the gear and motor-head variety), hot-spring lovers, twitters, or just about anyone getting away from it all.

Like Beitou, a major attraction of Yangmingshan is the hot-spring baths. The park is filled with kÄ“ng (sulphur steam vents), the largest being Xiaoyoukeng in the northwestern part of the park. To the east, Lengshuikeng has hot-spring baths open to the public for free.

Most people feel that the North Cross-Island Hwy ends around Chilan, a small forest reserve, but it actually continues south to Lishan and north to Ilan. If you want to continue your exploration of Taiwanâ€™s rugged mountains, head north. Not far south down the road is the turn-off to Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area (; TÃ ipÃngshÄn GuÃ³jiÄ SÄ“nlÃn YÃ³ulÃ¨ QÅ«; recreate.forest.gov.tw/forest.php?init=05&char=en&forest=1; adult/child NT150/100), where youâ€™ll find hot springs, a small mountain train, a few trails and a pretty lake.

About 1Â½ hours further south down Hwy 7 itself is Wuling Forest Recreation Area, better known as Wuling Farm (WÇ”lÃng NÃ³ngchÇŽng; admission NT160). The farm (elevation 1740m to 2200m) was originally established in 1963 as a fruit- growing area by retired soldiers. It became part of Sheipa National Park in 1992. By the time you read this there will be little farming left in the reserve as new land-use laws finally take effect.

Wulai Northern Taiwan Travel Videos

The little aboriginal village of Wulai (WÅ«lÃ¡i) has long been touted as one of the top hot-springs resorts in Taiwan. But we advise against spending your money here as the town is pretty grubby (though many hotels are first rate inside) and the water is reportedly not very pure. As one local friend quipped, the only prosperous business in Wulai these days is selling water heaters.

That said, step outside the village and youâ€™re in a thickness of jungle that has impressed travellers for 200 years. You can hike, swim, river trace or just picnic by cool mountain streams. There are spectacular waterfalls in the area, some accessible just off the road, others known only to a few, and many excellent bird-watching venues. Even the tourist street in the village is not bad, especially for a hearty meal after a long day in the wilds.

Just 15km north of Hualien, inside Taroko National Park, lies Taroko Gorge (TÃ ilÇ”gÃ©), Taiwanâ€™s top tourist destination. With its marbleÂ-ÂÂwalled canyons, lush vegetation and cliffs so outsized they block out the sky, Taroko Gorge puts the â€˜Formosaâ€™ in Ilha Formosa.

Taroko contains almost half of all the animal species in Taiwan, including the Formosan black bear and wild boar. Itâ€™s unlikely travellers will come across these larger animals but itâ€™s not hard to spot a Taiwan macaque or two. The park covers over 120, 000 hectares and rises from sea level in the east to over 3700m further west. The blue-green Liwu River cuts through the centre, forging deep slitted valleys and ravines before emptying into the sea.

Taitungâ€™s charms reveal themselves slowly as you get to know the locals, discover the treasures in the surrounding hills and coastline, and learn how to move with, not against, the rhythms of southern life. But if you donâ€™t have time for that, we suggest either giving the place a complete miss (there are other places nearby to use as a base) or just spend some time in transit.

Once upon a time, Taipeiâ€™s streets were chock-full of taxis, buses and racing scooters, and its sidewalks congested with people and trash. The air was foul, and the architecture â€“ shrines, temples and old colonial buildings aside â€“ was ugly. Central planning seemed sporadic or even nonexistent. In the late 1980s, as the scars of former martial law began healing, citizens realised that while they were materially rich, their quality of life was poor. They demanded change and over the next decade, city planners did what youâ€™d expect those schooled in Asiaâ€™s most computer-savvy society to do: they played a protracted game of SimCity, only for keeps.

â€˜Traffic is hideous!â€™ cried Taipeiers, and a light-rail network was built. â€˜The rivers are putrid, and our kids have nowhere to play!â€™ was the next complaint. â€˜Strengthen environmental laws and build parks on every river bankâ€™, was the answer. â€˜Ugly buildings, we canâ€™t stand looking at â€™em, â€™ moaned the people of Taipei. â€˜Then letâ€™s build interesting-looking places!â€™ was the Solomonic decision of city planners.
